Windows 7 and Terminal Server 2008R2 – End of Life

On 14th January 2020 both Windows 7 and Windows Terminal Server 2008R2 go end of life. Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended on 13th January 2015 but was extended to 14th January 2020.

What does this mean for Windows 7 & Terminal Server 2008R2?

End of life is the term that Microsoft uses to identify the period when the company will no longer support an operating system or application. In this case, it means that, as of 14th Jan 2020, Microsoft will move on from Windows 7 & Terminal Server 2008R2, and no longer patch security holes in the operating system.

What happens when support ends?

If you continue to use Windows 7 & Terminal Server 2008R2 after support has ended, your PC/server will still work, but will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. You will no longer receive software updates, including security updates, from Microsoft. Over time other software like antivirus programmes, web browsers etc will remove support and no longer work.

Will Teleos still work?

Teleos will still function, but over time this will become increasingly difficult to maintain due to no support from Microsoft. Eventually we will move away from older operating systems and stop support for them.

When should you upgrade?

If you can upgrade early, we’d strongly suggest doing this sooner rather than later. There are multiple options on offer for replacements. These being fully fledged PC’s or cheaper “dumb” terminals if no local work is required by that computer or cloud servers.

Replacement options?

There are multiple replacement options available, these are listed below.

Server – This can be replaced by either a traditional local server, or a cloud option. Both offerings will use new operating systems that Microsoft support for the next 7 years.

Local Workstation – This can be replaced by either a local PC or a dumb terminal. PC’s are more expensive than dumb terminals but will allow you to work locally when not on your Teleos server. Dumb terminals are cheaper and do not have an operating system so are supported as long as the manufacturers update them. Please be aware because they are a “dumb” terminal, they will only connect to your Teleos server and will have no access to any programmes outside of the main server.

Thank you!

Team Teleos doing Wolf Run for StreetVet Charity

This Saturday, eight members of Teleos staff are competing in the Wolf Run – a hardcore 10k run across raw natural terrain including open ground, woodland, lakes and lots of mud! There’s also some surprise obstacles along the way!

We are raising money for StreetVet which delivers free care to the homeless and their dogs across the UK. So, if you can spare a few pennies for this wonderful charity please donate here.

Many thanks for your support.

Upgrade Teleos to a synchronising CLOUD SERVER

Teleos has always been wary of practices relying on cloud servers. There are huge benefits when running a cloud system, but our concern has always been that your entire practice records are, with conventional cloud servers, sitting somewhere in cyberspace. So, what happens if there is a major problem? How would you get your data? Would you be able to run your business without your client and animal records?

If you have a small database, it may be feasible to download a backup of your database from a conventional cloud server. But as your database gets bigger and you add more x-ray images and supporting files, this becomes untenable.

Over the past twelve months Teleos has been rolling out its synchronising cloud server. So now you can have all the benefits of a cloud server, with the added security of having a live copy of all your database in your own physical building.

If you are looking to upgrade your server, please give Jon Hewitt a call on 07970 921887

Latest Windows Update

On Tuesday night Microsoft released an update for Windows servers, this has unfortunately stopped some of you being able to connect with more than one computer at a time. We’re aware of the issue but as you can imagine we’re being flooded with calls.

If your server has this problem please either send us an email: support@teleosvet.co.uk, with the name of the practice and what’s happening. Or you can login to our support portal and drop us a message there.

Many Thanks, Teleos Support

Making Tax Digital

As you will no doubt be aware, Making Tax Digital for VAT Returns commences on 1st April 2019. As a result, you are required to submit your VAT returns electronically via HMRC compatible accounts software for your first full VAT quarter after 1st April.

Teleos is a clinical sales ledger, not a full accounts package and it provides many features not available in standard accounts packages. However, the way in which you record your purchases and run a Nominal ledger are the same as any other business. For that reason, Teleos will never produce a Purchase or Nominal ledger – as you can use an off-the-shelf package recommended by your Accountant. As your Accountant will be totally familiar with this package, it also takes less time (and cost less), to produce audited accounts.

All of the major off-the-shelf accounts programs are already HMRC compatible for VAT purposes.

Because you do not submit your VAT returns directly via Teleos, there is no requirement for the program to be compatible with the HMRC system. However, Teleos does produce and maintain sales and VAT figures, and there is a requirement for these totals to be passed via a ‘digital link’ into your accounts package. It will no longer be acceptable to simply make a note of the Teleos generated figures and then retype them into your accounts package. However, it should be noted that this does not have to be done this year – as there is a ‘soft landing’ period of 12 months to establish a link with whatever program you use.

The facility for Teleos to export files into a CSV format for Sage Accounting Software has been in the program for many years. The ‘Export To Sage’ options can be found in Admin -> Accounts. You have three options to choose from; Summary, Detailed or Cumulative and they all produce a csv file automatically.

Some further development time has been allocated to make the output configurable, so that any accounts package can import the relevant sales and VAT figures to make it compliant with HMRC’s requirements. A further notice will be issued when this facility is available.

Effective Dates

1st April 2019       –              You must submit your VAT return via HMRC compatible software.

1st April 2020       –              Teleos must be linked digitally to your HMRC compatible software.
